Anthropic Picks Bengaluru for Its First India Office
Anthropic is opening its first office in India. CEO Dario Amodei met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to discuss the company’s expansion plans, and Bengaluru has been chosen as the site. It will be Anthropic’s second office in the Indo-Pacific region, after Tokyo.
What happened
Amodei posted about the meeting on X on Saturday. He said they discussed Anthropic’s expansion into India and noted that Claude Code use in the country is up fivefold since June. The two also talked about how India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people.
Karnataka’s IT Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed the Bengaluru choice earlier in the week. He pointed to the city’s standing as a global tech hub: ranked fifth in the world in AI and DeepTech ecosystems, home to more than 100,000 AI professionals, and accounting for half of India’s AI talent.
Why India, and why now
The fivefold jump in Claude Code use since June is the number that matters here. Anthropic did not pick India as a symbolic gesture. It picked India because that is where its coding agent is being used at serious scale, and the growth curve is steep.
This is a deployment story, not a research story. The meeting with Modi was not about the next model. It was about how AI gets used across education, healthcare, and agriculture for more than a billion people. That tells you where the frontier AI conversation is moving: from who builds the best model to who deploys it best at national scale.
AI diplomacy is now a real thing
A frontier-lab CEO sitting down with a prime minister is no longer unusual, and that is itself worth noticing. Governments are now direct stakeholders in how AI rolls out. They control the sectors where AI could matter most: public education, public health systems, agriculture. Companies that want real-world deployment at billion-person scale have to work through governments, and governments know it.
For Anthropic, an India office buys proximity to all of this: the talent, the developers, the policymakers, and the problems worth solving.
What it means for builders
First, India is now a first-class market for frontier AI companies. Office openings usually come before developer events, local partnerships, hiring pushes, and region-specific tooling. If you build on Claude or compete with it, watch what Anthropic does in Bengaluru over the next year.
Second, the talent picture gets sharper. More than 100,000 AI professionals already work in Bengaluru, and half of India’s AI talent sits in one city. When a frontier lab sets up shop there, competition for that talent intensifies. Salaries, expectations, and hiring standards all move up.
Third, for builders in South Asia, this is a signal about where the industry’s attention is going. The fastest-growing developer markets are no longer only in the US and Europe. The labs are following the users, and the users are increasingly here.
